Chesapeake Montessori School, founded in 1977, is a non-profit corporation governed by a Board of Trustees. The school's first four years were spent in rented classroom space in Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church, near the school's present location. In September 1981 we moved into our own facility, planned especially for our Montessori program. In September 2000 we expanded our facility so that we now have a Toddler classroom, two Primary classrooms, and two Elementary classrooms. In addition to a complete set of Montessori materials designed for the appropriate age, each classroom contains a suitable library. Realizing that the materials and furnishings are a very important part of the indoor environment, our staff takes pride in maintaining our materials in beautiful condition. Many of our language, geography, history, and biology materials have been made by our staff, and are unique to our school. There are large outdoor play areas and gardens for the children to enjoy.

Since 1979 Chesapeake Montessori School has been accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale. A.M.I. was founded in 1929 by Dr. Montessori; this organization, headquartered in Holland, continues to carry on her work in many parts of the world. A.M.I. is the Montessori organization that most closely follows the ideas of Dr. Montessori.

In addition, CMS has been accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education since 1977, and by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools since 1996.
